City leaders support reduced energy use Jun 26 - The U.S. Conference of Mayors endorsed the Energy Star Challenge to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent or more in commercial and industrial buildings. The Conference represents 1,139 cities with populations of 30,000 or more.

Tougher standards for smog Jun 21 - EPA is proposing stronger ground-level ozone standards to improve the nation's air quality. Ozone is a major component of smog and can cause or aggravate existing lung problems such as asthma.

$1 million for drinking water violations Jun 15 - Santa Maria Refining was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to pay a criminal penalty for drinking water violations, and for making false statements to EPA. The company disposed of contaminated wastewater into wells that were not permitted for that use.

First national study will help farms cut emissions Jun 14 - EPA and researchers from eight universities will for the first time measure levels of particulate matter, hydrogen sulfide, and other gases from livestock facilities nationwide. The data will ultimately be used to bring farms into compliance more quickly.

Cleaner air for Las Vegas Jun 13 - Under a $60 million settlement, Nevada Power is required to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, a harmful air pollutant, from its Clark Generating Station by about 2,300 tons annually. The settlement resolves claims that Nevada Power made modifications to the plant without installing required air pollution controls.
